Geeky Cinephile Musings…
I don't pontificate, I blather.

The Gauntlet Has Been Thrown!!

Well, my beloved husband, Paul Livingston, is going away on tour for the entire month of March.  This leaves me needing a project.  This morning I woke up (as if…) inspired.  My challenge to myself:

WATCH 30 MOVIES IN 30 DAYS!!!!

I know you’re out there. I can hear you breathing.

Let me explain.  I have rehearsals all this month for a musical I’m doing that opens at the end of March.  For any of you who’ve ever done theatre, you’ll know exactly how much of a time commitment this is on its own.  I also work full time as an actor/property manager, so there’s another huge chunk o’ the day gone.  And then, well, I do have a life.  So a movie a day seems pretty damned ambitious to me.

There’s another reason for this madness.  I used to work at a video store…two, actually–VisArt Video in Chapel Hill, NC (as well as their other branches throughout that area) was my home for years, and later there was Video H20, where I met my beloved Bill Ackerman and truly began to delve into Dario Argento.  Working in a video store has one, big-assed, double-edged sword: THERE ARE A MILLION MOVIES TO WATCH.  This has left gaps in my movie knowledge that I am damned ashamed to admit to, but here I am, a film blogger, no less, who has never seen Blade Runner.

Oh, shut up.  Yes, I fucking KNOW, all right?!?!? I KNOW!!!!!!!!!! I’ve also never seen Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, or Kramer Vs Kramer.  It’s fucking pathetic.  I’m trying to rectify that now.  SO!! Here’s the EEE-vil plan:

Take a nice long look at the films below.  Each film has been judiciously chosen (oh, all right, I was pretty much sticking to the Netflix play it now queue because logistically I need to be able to watch any of these at a moment’s notice).  You’ll see some categories are scant.  That’s because most Family Films I haven’t seen already suck.  I’m sorry.  You’ll also notice that there are a few films that you’re not going to believe I haven’t seen.  Here’s the thing–some of them, I have.  It’s just been so long I cannot remember a single thing, like Smokey & the Bandit–that one I watched around the tender age of five or so.  It’ll be nice to revisit them with an adult (??) mind.

Each movie will be put on a piece of paper and dropped into a bag.  Every day I’ll draw a name from the bag.  Simple as pie.  I’m hoping y’all will find this interesting.  Feel free to comment–I’d love to hear about what these films mean to you.

Update 3/2/11:

I’ve come up with a format for how I’ll comment on and rate these films.  Otherwise, we all know I’ll spend an hour per film, and I just don’t have that kind of time.  I will answer the same questions for every film and rate them on a scale of 1 to 5 dancing elephants.  Because I love elephants.  I’ve also added “La Vie En Rose” to my possible films because Netflix sent it, so I gotta watch it at some point soon.  Let’s begin!!

  1. You know, there are 17 films on your list that I’ve never seen if that makes you feel any better. I own copies of 23 of them, though ‘Blade Runner’ (which is very good) isn’t one of them. In the summer of 2005, I decided to cross a number of “you haven’t seen…?!” films off my list, and in one month I saw ‘Lawrence Of Arabia’, ‘Gone With The Wind’, ‘Titanic’, ‘Yankee Doodle Dandy’ and ‘Schindler’s List’.

    Also, aww shucks.

  2. No. Way. Bill!! I’m speechless!!!

  3. Yep. AND I still haven’t managed to catch up with…brace yourself…Gladiator, Cabaret, The Abyss, Amistad, Dirty Dancing, Monty Python’s Life Of Brian (which I’ve owned for at least 8 years), Akira, Field Of Dreams, Patton (not the whole thing, anyway), Chicago, JFK (again, only saw half, owned it for 5 years), What The (Bleep) Do We Know, Black Hawk Down, The Last Emperor, Breakin’ 2: Electric Boogaloo or any Tyler Perry movies…yet.

  4. Is there a follow up post to this? I’d love to know how it went!

  5. Ahh yes the link that I didn’t click. Got it.
